The Misfits (1961)
The first movie in our new series is one left over from the Clark Gable Series, the Misfits, starring Clark Gable and directed by John Huston.
Gable felt that it was a compliment that he was offered the part of Gay (the male lead) since he considered it an “intellectual” script, a western but not a western and unlike other parts he had played.
Arthur Miller who wrote the screen play, was not at first taken with the idea of casting Gable, but after he met and talked with Gable, he decided that Gable was Gay, or Gay was Gable.
Gable died shortly after the filming for “The Misfits” finished, but he saw large parts of the film. He was pleased with his performance and said that it was the best thing he had done since “Gone with the Wind.”
