The Four Feathers

The Four Feathers (1939) with Ralph Richardson.

This version of The Four Feathers stars Ralph Richardson and is directed by Zoltan Korda.  This film is a product of the Korda brothers who evidently carried on screaming arguments when they worked together.  The movie is based on a novel written by A.E.W. Mason.

Produced by Alexander Korda, production design by Vincent Korda (uncredited).  Alexander Korda evidently spared no expense filming the movie, shooting it in Technicolor and doing most of the exterior shots on location in Sudan.  The film features C. Aubrey Smith as General Burroughs.
The Four Feathers was initially adapted into a silent film in 1915 starring Edgar L. Davenport.  Another version was made as a silent silm in 1929 starring Richard Arlen.  Another version called “Storm Over the Nile” was made in 1955.  In 1977, a television film was made with Beau Bridges and in 2002 a version was made with Heath Ledger.

We frequently include films like "The Four Feathers" in our Novel/Movie series for the public library.
