The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which conducts aerial surveys, has seen six calving pairs of right whales since the calving season started in November. they are hoping to see more before the migration ends in april.
The right whale population is estimated to be somewhere between 400 to 500. In 1992, it ewas estimated to be only around 300.
The aerial surveys have not revealed whales actively entangled in commercial fishing gear, suffering from strikes by ships or dead, floating in the water.
